A wire collimator is a high precision gauge that allows checking the correct installation of guides, ruling out possible deviations in their straightness and parallelism.

To check the correct installation of the guides, once the structural element on which they are placed has been leveled, the collimator is zeroed at both ends of the guides. Subsequently, the collimator is moved every 200 mm (for example), and measurements are taken to detect any deviations in straightness and parallelism along its path. If there is a deviation, the support of the linear guide on the structural element must be rectified.

The measuring wire is attached to the head or a special clamping device, inserted into the end of the base over a pulley and tensioned with a weight (arrangement according to DIN 8606).

The alignment tester must be placed on the machine carriage or on a corresponding device, which can be moved in longitudinal direction in predefined steps on the machine base. The measuring wire must be aligned in such a way that the same values are measured at the start and end position of the carriage, i.e. it must be tensioned to form an imaginary connection line parallel to these positions. When the cable is aligned with the bearing, the value indication is set to zero.

The deviation from straightness can now be read directly on the display for each position when both parts of the image are snapped together by moving the microscope horizontally with the integrated micrometer spindle.
