Charpy notch tester (resilience test)

The resilience test is a destructive test, which consists of breaking a specimen of the material to be tested by hitting it with a pendulum. To facilitate crack initiation, an indentation or notch is made in the specimen.

The purpose of the test is to determine the energy that a material can withstand when receiving a shock or impact without breaking. The more brittle the material and the lower its toughness, the less resilience it will present.

This behavior is highly dependent on the temperature and chemical composition of the material.

Two types of tests are performed:

Charpy
in which the specimen rests on a support and is impacted in the center on the face opposite the indentation.
Izod
in which the test specimen is half-embedded, receiving the impact at the end of the cantilever on the face of the notch.

Notch measurement procedure

Before carrying out the Charpy pendulum resilience test, it is essential to measure the notch (it can be U-shaped or V-shaped), as indicated in ISO 148-1, for example.

This process can be performed using an optical microscope or a profile projector.
